@7 Syquest EZ-135:-
@4
My task this month is to write a review about the Syquest 135, without
mentioning the Iomega Zip. Can it be done?
Possibly.
The EZ135 drive is Syquest's reply to the other drive that I'm not allowed
to mention. Whilst looking a bit nicer than the older style Syquest
drives, I still don't like the look very much.
Each Syquest cartridge can hold 135meg of data which is 35meg more than
that other drive. The cartridges are about 4 inches wide which isn't
really THAT big, although it is twice the size of Molgrat's <Snip-Ed.>
The EZ drive itself is bigger than the zip obviously because the
cartridges are much larger. #2More>>>@4
To insert a cartridge it's just a case of slotting it in, but removing the
thing is a different story, you have to wait until the damn thing stops
spinning, then you move the lever left and eject the disk.
Pretty naffy eh?
Not like that other drive.
Speedwise, the Syquest is slightly faster than the (other drive).
Both rate at just over 1.5Meg/sec though.
Reliability wise, the Syquest cartridges aren't as strong as err, (sod it)
Zip cartridges, although if treated with care, both will last a long time.
Just don't do our infamous `chuck it out of your bedroom window & see if
it still works' test. Basically, because it won't. Believe me.
The Syquest's power supply (external version) seems to have been designed
#2More>>>@4
using the same concept as Commodore engineers used in the late 80's,
i.e crap and bulky, oh alright... bulky. Bricks abound.
Although the Syquest uses older and proven technology, it is by no
means a load of trollop, it's just not as `cutting edgey' as the
Zippy.
The choice is clear, if you need as much space as possible on your
removable device, go for the Syquest, on the other hand if you can bear
the thought of having 30Meg less space, but on the other hand own
a piece of cutting edge technology with very strong & reliable disks
then the Zippy wippy is your obvious choice.
Here's a clue to what drive I prefer:
Rod, Jane, Freddy & Jeffrey. #2More>>>

Price: 200 squid. For the drive that is, not rainbow.
